India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has again offered Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin mediation to end the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine.

"We fully support the restoration of peace and stability as soon as possible," Modi said at the meeting between the two in the megacity of Kazan, which was broadcast by the Kremlin and television.

Putin had previously welcomed him there with a hug and praised the good bilateral relations between the two countries. Modi is one of more than 20 heads of state and government who have traveled to Russia for the Brics summit of emerging industrial nations.

Problems should be solved in a peaceful manner, Modi said. As India has humanitarian issues in mind, the country is in contact with all sides and is prepared to provide "all kinds of support" to end the war. Modi said that he wanted to discuss the issue in greater depth during further talks with Putin.

Modi had already visited Russia once in July. His gesture of hugging Putin caused anger in Ukraine as a Russian missile attack had previously destroyed a children's hospital in Kiev. Later, Modi also hugged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit to Kiev.

Putin wants to use the Brics summit in Kazan to show that he is not isolated internationally despite his war of aggression against Ukraine and the Western sanctions. He is striving to build a new world order without Western dominance, but also emphasized that the Brics alliance, which also includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates, is not directed against anyone.
