Esther Keller (GLP) remains a member of the Basel government. The incumbent Director of Construction and Transport was able to defend her seat in the executive in the second round of voting. The red-green party has thus failed in its attempt to regain the government majority.

Keller, who has been Director of Construction and Transport since the beginning of 2021, received 30,722 votes in the second round of voting on Sunday, according to the final result from the State Chancellery. The opposing candidate Anina Ineichen (Greens), who was put forward by the left-wing parties, received 19,872 votes. The voter turnout was 51.7 percent.
The 40-year-old Keller was the only incumbent to make it to the second round of voting after the general election of the Basel cantonal council on October 20. The other six previous members of the cantonal government had already been confirmed in office in the first round of voting.
With Ineichen, the SP, Greens and Basta wanted to win back the 16-year red-green majority in the Basel executive that was lost in the 2020 elections. Instead of a Basta candidate, Keller made the leap into the executive.
