The leader of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), Tino Chrupalla, says he is traveling to Donald Trump's inauguration next Monday. He is following an invitation from Washington, Chrupalla told the German Press Agency. The invitation had come from Republican circles.

"Attending the inauguration of President Donald Trump shows once again that we are implementing our interest-driven policy," explained Chrupalla. "This presidency will change the world forever." With Chancellor candidate Alice Weidel, Germany stands ready to be a strong partner on the continent of Europe. "Germany must maintain good and peaceful relations with all countries."

Weidel will not be attending the inauguration. Her spokesperson had already announced this shortly after the turn of the year, citing the schedule of the Bundestag election campaign.
