France's new Prime Minister François Bayrou is confident that his government will not be brought down by the opposition. "I am convinced that the action I am defining before you and the government team will ensure that we are not toppled," Bayrou said on BFMTV after appointing his ministers.

Bayrou has once again put together a center-right government - just like his predecessor Michel Barnier. His cabinet was toppled by the opposition in a vote of no confidence after less than three months in office. Bayrou is now relying on political heavyweights and has two former prime ministers in his cabinet: Manuel Valls as Minister for Overseas Territories and Élisabeth Borne as Education Minister.

The center parties and the conservatives together do not have an absolute majority in the National Assembly. Without acquiescence, they therefore face the threat of being toppled. Bayrou had originally hoped to be tolerated by the Socialists and possibly also the Greens and Communists. However, it is unclear whether he will succeed.

In any case, initial reactions were harsh. "This is not a government, this is a provocation", wrote Socialist leader Olivier Faure on X. Green Party leader Marine Tondelier said that the members of the government, who had historically come from the left, had broken with the political left a long time ago and spoke of a masquerade.
