Around four weeks after the uprising in Syria, France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has promised the country support.

"A new hope emerged a few weeks ago. Hope for a sovereign Syria, a stable Syria and a peaceful Syria," said Barrot in Damascus during a joint visit with Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. This hope is due to the determination and mobilization of the population. "It is a fragile hope, but a realistic hope, which is why France is standing by the Syrians."

Following a visit to the Saidnaya prison near Damascus, which is notorious for torture and murder, Barrot reaffirmed France's commitment to contributing to the full investigation of the crimes committed there. France has already supported the work of Syrian civil society organizations to document the crimes and violations committed in Syria since 2011 under the rule of long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad.

Foreign Minister Barrot also visited the premises of the French embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since 2012. Depending on the political and security conditions, the diplomatic representation should be reopened. France will gradually prepare its return to Syria, said Barrot.
