In Romania, incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is ahead in the presidential election according to voter polls, but has so far fallen short of an absolute majority. Accordingly, he would face second-placed candidate Elena Lasconi from the conservative-liberal reform party USR in a run-off election on December 8.

Several opinion research institutes surveyed voters immediately after they cast their ballots. According to the Avangarde and CURS institutes, Ciolacu can expect 25 percent and Lasconi 18 percent. Meaningful counting results are expected on Monday night.
