According to Russian authorities, a Ukrainian drone attack has triggered several explosions in the Voronezh region. The governor of the region, Alexander Gusev, announced that objects containing explosive material had begun to detonate. He did not give any details. In Kiev, the news portal "Ukrajinska Prawda" reported, citing intelligence sources, that a 9,000 square meter depot had been hit with rockets, tank ammunition and artillery shells from the Russian armed forces, among other things. There was no confirmation from the Russian side.

On social networks, there was initially unverifiable video footage of huge clouds of smoke rising into the sky. Eyewitnesses reported explosions and smoke over the affected Podgorenski district around 190 kilometers south of the regional capital Voronezh. According to the authorities, a state of emergency was declared there. Houses were evacuated.

Two elderly women were taken to hospital, according to Gusev. Dozens of residents were housed and cared for in emergency accommodation in the school, while others were accommodated with relatives, it was reported. The emergency was caused by falling debris from drones that had been shot down, said Gusev.

Voronezh region repeatedly the target of Ukrainian attacks

The Ministry of Defense in Moscow initially provided no information on the drone attack in the Voronezh region. The ministry's statement only mentioned a new Ukrainian drone attack on the Belgorod region near the border. The flying object had been destroyed, it said.

Nevertheless, the Voronezh region has repeatedly been the target of Ukrainian attacks in the past, not least because the Russian occupying forces receive their military supplies from there. In June last year, there were serious explosions at a fuel depot in the region.

As part of its defense against the Moscow invasion, which has been going on for more than two years, Ukraine has been carrying out daily attacks against Russian territory. However, the consequences usually bear no comparison to the massive destruction and high number of casualties caused by Russian attacks against Ukraine. The Ukrainian military announced that the Russians had attacked more than 80 infrastructure objects in the neighboring country since Saturday.
