Never before have so many people voted in the contested US state of Georgia on the first day of early voting for the US election as this time, according to the authorities. More than 300,000 votes were cast in the swing state on Tuesday, Gabriel Sterling, who is in charge of the election, announced on the X platform. According to him, the last record for a first election day was 136,000 votes in 2020. Sterling spoke of a "spectacular turnout" for which there are no adjectives.

The presidential election in the USA will take place on November 5. According to polls, it is likely to be a neck-and-neck race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Early voting has already begun in several states. Voters are eagerly awaiting the results in the highly contested swing states where the election is likely to be decided.

Georgia was one of the states that played a key role in the outcome of the 2020 election. Democrat Joe Biden won the state by a margin of around 12,000 votes. Trump tried to have his election defeat there - as well as in other states - changed retrospectively. Among other things, he called on Georgia's top election supervisor, his Republican party colleague Brad Raffensperger, to "find" enough votes for him to "recalculate" the result and turn it in his favor. Trump has been indicted for his attempts to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in the state.
