  • Biden had appeared uncertain in the TV debate, had digressed and had sometimes given confused answers.

Following President Joe Biden's disastrous performance in the televised debate against Donald Trump last week, a member of the Democratic Party has for the first time publicly called for Biden to withdraw as the designated presidential candidate.

"Since President Biden, unlike Trump, has always stood up for our country first and foremost and not for himself, I am confident that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw," said Congressman Lloyd Doggett from Texas. In a statement, he referred to the TV duel in which the 81-year-old Biden had failed to "effectively defend his many accomplishments".

"My decision to make these strong reservations public was not made lightly, and it in no way diminishes my respect for all that President Biden has accomplished," Doggett said.

Biden had appeared uncertain in the TV debate, digressing and at times giving confused answers. This had led many Democrats to question whether the 81-year-old was the right candidate to run against Trump. However, prominent Democratic politicians have repeatedly backed him in recent days, even though there has been some debate about his suitability behind closed doors.

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said on MSNBC on Tuesday that it was a "legitimate question whether Biden's performance was just an episode or a reflection of his overall condition. However, this question could be asked of both candidates, including Trump.
