China is threatening to retaliate following the tariff increase announced by the USA. If the US insists on its will, China will take all necessary countermeasures to defend its rights and interests, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce.

The People's Republic hoped that the USA would not repeat the same mistakes and would return to the right path to resolve differences of opinion, the spokesperson continued.

It was not clear from the spokesperson's comments what measures China would take. The world's second-largest economy had previously imposed tariffs on imports from the USA, for example, or in other cases imposed export controls on raw materials important to the high-tech industry.

Dispute over fentanyl

Trump had announced a doubling of the tariffs already in force against Chinese goods. With the increase, the surcharges would then amount to 20 percent from next Tuesday. The Republican justified the measure by stating that the drug fentanyl, which is produced in China, is entering the United States via Mexico and Canada.

The spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce explained that the People's Republic has one of the strictest drug bans in the world. The USA was ignoring the facts and merely blaming others with its behavior without solving its own problems.
