Following the debacle in the Bundestag elections, the previous FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr wants to take over the leadership of the party. According to information from FDP circles obtained by the German Press Agency, he is applying for the party chairmanship and thus the successor to Christian Lindner.

"Some say it's not the time for liberal politics. Yet we need economic and social freedom more than ever," Dürr explained on X in the evening. The FDP is already missing from the Bundestag, he said in a video message. He wanted to help the party make a strong comeback.

The federal election was a "bitter defeat", Dürr said. But defeats are no reason to give up. The FDP is not over yet. "Germany needs a centrist party. A party that believes in the power of the individual and doesn't think that the state should regulate everything. A party that brings together economic freedom and social freedom," said Dürr.

The FDP performed disastrously in the federal election with 4.3 percent and missed out on a place in the Bundestag. The previous party leader Lindner reacted immediately and announced his withdrawal from politics.

At first, FDP European politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann and party veteran Wolfgang Kubicki were considered for the chairmanship. They declared their willingness to help rebuild the party. Strack-Zimmermann emphasized, however, that she did not want to become party chairwoman. "I am convinced that the rebuilding of the FDP can only succeed as a team. The leadership should be taken over by a young and fresh personality," she explained.
