At least three people have been killed in a powerful explosion near the airport in the Pakistani megacity of Karachi, according to authorities. At least two Chinese nationals were among the dead, according to a police spokesman.

He spoke of a suicide attack that took place on Monday night. According to the report, a vehicle loaded with explosives rammed into a car in which Chinese workers were traveling.

A further 17 people were injured in the incident, it was reported. There were contradictory reports in the local media about the exact cause of the explosion.

The separatist group of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the alleged attack. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the act on the online platform X.

Attacks by militant groups have recently increased again in Pakistan. In the past, there have also been repeated attacks on Chinese workers by separatists in the south-western province of Baluchistan. They fear that China is exploiting the resource-rich province. There have also been attacks by the BLA in the port city of Karachi, which is also located in the south.
