Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has announced his resignation. The move comes after intense criticism of his role in an abuse scandal that has rocked the Anglican Church. Welby is accused of failing to make public the abuse of over 100 boys and young men by a church lawyer over decades.
In a statement, 68-year-old Welby admitted that he had to take both personal and institutional responsibility for the events between 2013 and 2024. He emphasized that the decision to resign was to underline the Church of England's seriousness about necessary change and commitment to a safer church.
Welby expressed his deep sorrow for the suffering of the victims and survivors and said that he felt for them at this difficult time. The Archbishop of Canterbury's role also includes the coronation of the British monarch, highlighting the importance of his position within the Church and the country.
A sign of change
Welby's resignation is seen by many as a necessary step to restore trust in the Church. High-ranking church representatives had called for his resignation in order to send a clear signal for a new beginning. The Church of England now faces the challenge of implementing the necessary reforms and regaining the trust of the faithful.
