A gruesome discovery of corpses is puzzling Kenyan investigators: in a former quarry used as a garbage dump in a slum in Nairobi, residents have discovered body parts tied up in plastic bags. After the discovery on Friday, the police issued an initial statement saying that the remains were those of six women.

Human rights organizations, which had rushed to the site on Friday, spoke of eight bodies. The police, however, said that the body parts had been distributed among several sacks. Homicide investigators and forensic experts are trying to clarify the identity of the dead. According to initial police findings, the victims were killed around two weeks ago. The place where the bodies were found is close to a police station.

Increasing number of brutal murders of women

The background to the murders is still unclear. At the beginning of the year, there were nationwide protests in Kenya against femicides in the face of an increasing number of brutal murders of women. Since then, there have been further cases of women being murdered by partners or strangers. Following the protests against government policy in recent weeks, people are still missing in the East African country who have been victims of abductions - presumably by police officers.
