The money is to go to a charitable presidential foundation and a Trump museum and the legal dispute will be settled accordingly, according to the court document. ABC will also pay one million US dollars in legal fees to Trump. The Republican had sued the broadcaster and its presenter George Stephanopoulos for defamation.

Stephanopoulos had said in an interview with Republican MP Nancy Mace in March that Trump had been convicted under civil law for the rape of US author E. Jean Carroll had been convicted. In fact, in 2023, a New York jury found that Trump had assaulted, sexually abused and later defamed Carroll in a New York department store in 1996. The accusation of rape was dismissed.

Trump had sued ABC after Stephanopoulos' statement. As part of the settlement of the legal dispute, the US broadcaster is also to publish a statement of regret over the mistake.
