A freight train collided with a construction train on the railroad line between Cologne and Aachen in Germany overnight. The affected railroad line is expected to remain closed for several days.

After the accident, which occurred near Kerpen in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the wagons were partially lying crosswise on the tracks, according to the fire department. Three people were injured. There were train cancellations and delays due to the line closure.

"It will probably take several days before everything is fixed," said a spokesperson for the rail company in the morning. First of all, the railroad carriages would have to be cleared away. Damage would also have to be repaired - the extent of this is still being clarified. So far, we know of four destroyed concrete masts and a torn down overhead line, among other things.
