A prison officer in England had sex with a prisoner in his cell, a fellow inmate filmed it with a cell phone - the video ended up on the Internet: A 30-year-old woman has been charged with serious misconduct in a public office.

She has to appear in court in London. The investigation was launched "after officers were made aware of a video that was allegedly recorded at Wandsworth Prison", the Metropolitan Police announced on request.

The clip also sheds light on the conditions in British prisons. Many prisons are criticized for miserable prison conditions. Overcrowding, vermin, gang violence and drugs are part of everyday life.

Always in the spotlight

London's Wandsworth prison is one of the best known in the country. German former tennis star Boris Becker also described difficult hygienic conditions and conflicts among the prisoners at Wandsworth after his release.

More than 1500 prisoners are housed there. The building, which opened in 1851, was originally designed for fewer than 1,000 inmates.

In September 2023, a spectacular escape of a terror suspect from the prison caused a sensation. He had sneaked out of the prison kitchen in his chef's uniform and tied himself up under a van with strips of his bed linen. The man was only caught again after days of searching.
