The Federal Council does not want to make austerity decisions to stabilize the federal budget "hors sol", but on a broad basis. This is how President Viola Amherd put it to the media in Bern on Monday.

After a group of experts presented a report with over sixty measures to relieve the federal budget on Thursday, two round tables on the report were held on Monday. One round table was for the social partners, the other for the political parties. Several members of the Federal Council took part.

After the talks, Amherd and Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter made a brief statement to the media, but without commenting on the content of the round tables. This was confidential, Amherd said when asked. "Everyone should be able to express themselves freely."

A third meeting with representatives of the cantons is to take place tomorrow, Tuesday. The Federal Council will then make decisions and submit a proposal for consultation, said Keller-Sutter.
