This was forecast by the private weather service Meteonews. The Alertswiss warning service issued a warning of slippery roads for the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft on Saturday evening. "From now until the morning hours, the following effects are possible: Sudden danger of slipping. Icy roads that are difficult to pass," it said. Alertswiss warned of traffic obstructions and advised people to use public transport.

The night from Friday to Saturday was the coldest of the winter so far. The thermometer dropped to -31.1 degrees in La Brévine in the canton of Neuchâtel and to -25 degrees in Andermatt in the canton of Uri. But it will be much warmer again on Sunday: the mercury will rise to around 7 degrees in the Central Plateau and even 12 degrees in Geneva during the day.
