Carbon dioxide emissions from fuels such as heating oil and gas fell by almost a fifth in 2023 compared to the previous year. The reason for the decrease is the improved energy efficiency of buildings and the use of renewable energies for heating.

Gas consumption in particular fell significantly for the second year in a row, the Federal Office for the Environment announced on Tuesday in its "CO2 statistics 2023". Compared to 1990, emissions were even 41.7 percent lower.

Carbon dioxide emissions from fuels remained the same compared to the previous year, it added. Compared to 1990, fuel emissions have fallen by 5.2 percent. Emissions still increased in 2022.

In addition to pandemic-related changes in mobility behavior with more working from home and fewer business trips, the growing share of electromobility in road traffic is also a reason for no further growth.
