Around ten days after the deadly cyclone "Chido" in the French overseas territory of Mayotte, the death toll has risen to 39 according to the latest count by the island's prefect. The identification of victims is continuing, the prefect explained on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the French Ministry of the Interior put the number of injured in an updated tally at 4136, 124 of whom had life-threatening injuries. Since the passage of "Chido", there have been at least 34 missions to search for missing persons, the ministry added. Drones have also been used.
Early Tuesday morning, a field hospital with a maternity ward and two operating theaters opened in a stadium in the east of the city of Mamoudzou. The facility can receive 100 people a day for consultations and provide 30 hospital stays.
The strongest hurricane to hit Mayotte in 90 years devastated many districts of the poorest French department on December 14. Since then, the emergency services have been working flat out to restore the water and electricity supply as well as the communications network. According to the prefect, 100,000 liters of water are now being distributed every day.
