According to this information, Kazakh Health Minister Akmaral Alnasarova said that there were at least six survivors. According to other reports, twelve people were injured and taken to hospital.

Because the plane crashed near Aktau airport on the Caspian Sea, there were numerous videos of the accident that were shared on social networks. A thick column of black smoke could be seen above the crash site.

The plane had taken off from Baku and was due to fly to the Chechen capital Grozny in Russia. However, the airport there was closed due to fog, so the plane was diverted to Makhachkala on the Caspian Sea. There was initially no information on the cause of the accident. According to unofficial information, the aircraft was an Embraer 190 operated by Azerbaijan Airlines.
