Entering Manhattan now costs money. New York is the first metropolis in the USA to introduce a vehicle toll in its congestion-plagued city. Since Sunday, most drivers have been charged a fee of 9 dollars - equivalent to around 8.70 euros. There are some exemptions, for example for low-income earners.

The toll zone applies - with a few exceptions - to the entire southern part of Manhattan up to 60th Street. The toll is not only intended to reduce traffic, but also pollution. The money raised is to be invested in local and regional public transport and infrastructure projects.

Protests and delays

The toll was actually supposed to be introduced last summer and cost 15 dollars. However, New York Governor Kathy Hochul initially halted the project due to economic concerns. The fees were lowered for the revised plan.

There were protests and lawsuits against the controversial program, including from politicians, cab drivers and residents. The neighboring state of New Jersey was also up in arms. Future US President Donald Trump has also criticized the toll plans.
