Amid speculation of his resignation, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a statement. Trudeau wants to make a statement at 4.45 p.m. German time at his residence Rideau Cottage, his office announced. No details were initially given on the subject or content of the statement.
Canadian media had previously reported that the Prime Minister, who is under pressure, could be about to resign - either only as party leader or also as head of government.
The 53-year-old has been leader of the Liberal Party for eleven years and Prime Minister since the end of 2015. Many people had originally praised him as a beacon of hope, but recently criticism of Trudeau has increased sharply, partly due to his economic policy.
The New Democratic Party, with which the Liberals had previously worked together, has already withdrawn its confidence in him and threatened a vote of no confidence. Most recently, Trudeau's deputy and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland also resigned.
If there were to be a new election, the polls currently look good for the Conservative Party under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre.
