The Aargau police dog "Farouk" has tracked down a missing senior citizen in a wooded area in Würenlingen AG. The 82-year-old had fallen in the forest. According to the police, the mountain sweat dog probably saved the man's life.

The wife had informed the police on Tuesday evening after the man, who was walking on a rollator, never arrived at the local restaurant "Frohsinn" and did not return to the retirement home they shared, as the Aargau cantonal police announced on Thursday.

Inquiries at hospitals and technical investigations into the missing man's cell phone were unsuccessful. The search dog "Farouk" therefore picked up the scent of the victim using a scent carrier.

The fine nose of the Bavarian mountain dog led the search team to a nearby wooded area, the police reported. There, the dog and its companion found the missing man.

Pensioner lying helpless in the undergrowth

The pensioner was uninjured but lying helplessly at the foot of a steep slope in the undergrowth. He was taken to hospital for a check-up.

If "Farouk" had not found the elderly man in time, it is doubtful whether he would have survived the chilly night, the police wrote. The Aargau cantonal police have three sniffer dogs that have searched for missing persons around 60 times this year.
