A recently published federal report reveals that around 13% of electricity consumption in Switzerland in households, service providers and industrial companies is wasted. This waste adds up to 6 to 7 terawatt hours (TWh) per year, not including the mobility and agricultural sectors.
These energy losses are caused, for example, by lighting that is switched on or ventilation in unused rooms. Despite the considerable savings potential, the Federal Council currently sees no need for new legal regulations or instruments at national level.
The report entitled "Energy wastage during operation without benefit" emphasizes that existing measures are already aimed at reducing unnecessary electricity consumption. The government believes that these measures are sufficient to support the goal of reducing energy waste.
