Thanks to a few muesli bars and wild berries, a hiker in Australia has survived two weeks in the wilderness. Student Hadi Nazari got lost on the challenging Hannels Spur mountain hiking trail, police said on Thursday.

He was then unable to find the camp site he had agreed with his friends. The 23-year-old was separated from his hiking group after stopping to take photos. Nazari quickly lost his bearings and was left to fend for himself in the wilderness. It was only on Wednesday evening that a police helicopter came to his rescue after hikers heard Nazari's cries for help.

Nazari had quenched his thirst at the watercourses in the area, police chief Andrew Spliet told the Australian broadcaster ABC. He had also passed a hiker's hut, where he had found two muesli bars. "And that was pretty much all he had eaten in the last two weeks," Spliet said of the involuntary adventurer. Apart from that, the 23-year-old only found a few berries.

The Hannels Spur hiking trail winds its way through the Snowy Mountains to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, the highest mountain in Australia. Temperatures in the area drop to five degrees or even lower at night, even in the current Australian summer.
