The coaching experiment with Nuri Sahin at Borussia Dortmund has come to an end. The club of Swiss international goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is parting ways with its head coach after just over six months.

The Bundesliga club announced the dismissal the morning after the 2-1 defeat at FC Bologna in the Champions League. Dortmund are in danger of missing out on a place in the knockout phase of the top flight as a result of the defeat.

In the Bundesliga, the Westphalians are currently well off the minimum target of qualifying for the Champions League. On June 1, BVB were still in the final of the top flight. After three defeats in its first three Bundesliga games of the new year, Borussia is already seven points behind fourth place.

No continuity

Since the end of Jürgen Klopp's era almost ten years ago, the coaching position at the Revierklub has resembled a permanent construction site. Sahin is already the eighth coach since 2015, with high-caliber names such as Thomas Tuchel, Lucien Favre and Marco Rose among those who have failed.

Sahin returned to BVB as Edin Terzic's assistant coach in January 2024 and took over as head coach at his youth club six months later with great praise from those in charge, having joined as a 12-year-old and making his professional debut at the age of 16.

Little experience

By contrast, the 36-year-old's experience as a head coach was limited. The former Turkish international had been in charge of Antalyaspor in his parents' homeland from 2021 to 2023.

After a promising start last summer, disillusionment quickly set in again in Dortmund. Sahin was already the focus of public criticism in October. The fourth defeat in a row was now one too many.
