Loïc Meillard is well on his way to a Hafjell double in Norway. The giant slalom winner from Saturday is clearly leading in the slalom after the first run.
Meillard, who still has a chance of winning the small crystal globe, was 34 and 44 hundredths faster respectively than the neo-Brazilian Lucas Pinheiro Braathen and the Austrian Fabio Gstrein on the flat slope in Hafjell.
France's Clément Noël and Norway's Atle Lie McGrath lost just over half a second on the in-form Swiss world champion, who is not letting back problems hold him back. The discipline leader Henrik Kristoffersen is 84 hundredths behind in 6th place.
Kristoffersen tackled the second-last slalom of the winter with a 77-point lead over Noël. Meillard has to make up 102 points to catch the Norwegian in the Slalom World Cup.
The second-best Swiss skier after 31 racers is Tanguy Nef in 8th intermediate place, 1.10 seconds behind, followed by Daniel Yule (10th/+1.42 s). Marc Rochat kept his small chance of qualifying for the World Cup final of the best 25 slalom racers in Sun Valley by finishing in 15th place. The man from Vaud will probably have to finish well inside the top 10 to do so.
Ramon Zenhäusern, who lost his starting place in the top 30, is in 26th place, Luca Aerni will open the second run in 30th place in the intermediate classification.
The second run starts at 12.30 pm.
