Borussia Dortmund concede their fourth defeat in the 10th Bundesliga round. BVB lost 1:3 in Mainz and Leverkusen also disappointed in Bochum.
A red card for a foul on captain Emre Can less than half an hour into the game plunged Dortmund to another defeat and halted the upswing of the previous week with two home wins against Leipzig and in the Champions League against Sturm Graz.
Still playing without the injured Gregor Kobel, Dortmund were without a chance in Mainz, even though Serhou Guirassy equalized with a penalty to make it 1:1. The former Stuttgart player's shot remained the only one on goal for Mainz for a long time. The hosts scored around the break through Jonathan Burkardt and Paul Nebel, two home-grown players, to secure victory. Silvan Widmer came on for Mainz in the closing stages.
Granit Xhaka and Bayer Leverkusen earned just one point against Bochum, who are still bottom of the table. The German champions took the lead after 17 minutes with Patrik Schick's first goal of the season in the Bundesliga, but were unable to hold on. Japan's Koji Miyoshi equalized in the 89th minute for a deserved 1-1 draw. It was the debut of new Bochum coach Dieter Hecking, who took over from Peter Zeidler.
Leverkusen are now nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich, who won 1-0 at newly promoted St. Pauli. Jamal Musiala scored the winner with a long-range shot in the 22nd minute.
