Cyprien Sarrazin has been "successfully operated on" after his heavy crash in the final training for the downhill in Bormio. This was announced by the French Ski Federation on Saturday morning.
Sarrazin was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. This injury is the accumulation of blood between the meninges. In an operation carried out in Italy on Friday evening, the doctors inserted a drain to allow the blood to drain away. "The operation went well, Cyprien remains under anesthesia for the time being," the federation said, explaining that more information would be announced "later today".
Sarrazin, number 2 in the downhill rankings last winter behind Marco Odermatt, crashed heavily on Friday in the second training session for the World Cup downhill in Bormio. The 30-year-old Frenchman, who won the downhill in Bormio a year ago, lost control of his skis on the "Stelvio" piste as he entered the final section. He literally flew over a bump and landed hard on his back and head. After around twenty minutes of treatment, Sarrazin was flown by helicopter to hospital in a neighboring municipality of Bormio.
