Bayern Munich responded with a gala to their first defeat of the season in the Bundesliga: RB Leipzig were sent home with a 5-1 thrashing.
Bayern have obviously digested last weekend's 2-1 defeat in Mainz well. 22:4 shots on goal and an emphatic 5:1 win over rivals Leipzig meant a perfect end to the calendar year.
Jamal Musiala's opening goal after 29 seconds and Benjamin Sesko's equalizer after 103 seconds were a first in the Bundesliga in front of 75,000 spectators in the sold-out Allianz Arena. For the first time, both teams scored in the first two minutes. After that, however, it was one-way football.
Ex-Leipzig player Konrad Laimer (25'), Joshua Kimmich (36'), Leroy Sané (75') and Alphonso Davies (78') scored almost at will against an astonishingly lackadaisical Leipzig, who already seemed to be in the winter break. Star striker Harry Kane also made a successful comeback after missing four games.
Bayern consolidated their leading position and put pressure on their closest rivals Leverkusen. The latter are seven points behind and play Freiburg on Saturday. After the short Christmas break, the Bundesliga resumes on January 10.
