For the first time at Zermatt Unplugged Intimate, delicious - and the people all well dressed

3.7.2024

The editor has never been to Zermatt Unplugged and has to confess: He's really missed out on something. The festival at the foot of the Matterhorn is very different from the big open-air festivals.

Did I have any expectations of Zermatt Unplugged? Not really. I thought the streets of the village would be full of the usual suspects - the colorfully dressed, sunglasses-wearing, slightly slurring guests. And I also assumed that there would be music blaring in your ears all the time, making Oropax a must.

But all that was a false assumption. Sorry. And it's not that all these stereotypes are negative, that's part of a festival. The adrenaline and happiness hormones are overflowing.

In Zermatt, the tourists merge seamlessly with the festival-goers. The alleyways are quiet and the many stages, some of which are far apart - there is an altitude difference of almost 1000 meters between the tent stage and the Blue Lounge - create individual hotspots.

People sing, barbecue and drink in these compact crowds. But what struck me in particular was that the people here are all so stylishly dressed. Really classy.

Zermatt is ahead of the pack

Normally, "fashion" at festivals is associated with practicality. Rain? Bring on the wellies and rain poncho! Sunshine? Three-rimmed, colored sunglasses and a dusty tank top will do!

But in Zermatt? Half the people could go straight to the catwalk after their concert.

Zermatt Unplugged is also ahead in terms of intimacy. I'm strolling through the village and a guitar is strumming outside a restaurant. The guests are eating, listening and sitting just two meters away from the artist. Unimaginable at other big festivals.

If, like me, you have no expectations, you can fully rely on the name Zermatt Unplugged in the Valais mountains. Because here you can really switch off - finally unplug and not be constantly under power.
