Swiss winter sports athletes finish just off the podium in ski jumping and biathlon. The facts from Sunday's winter sports.
Ski jumping. - Gregor Deschwanden missed out on his first podium in ski jumping at the World Cup in Oberstdorf. Still in 3rd place after the first round (234.5 m), the man from central Switzerland lost six positions with the second jump to just 213.5 m. After all, 9th place is Deschwanden's second-best result in a ski flying competition. After Timi Zajc on Saturday, Domen Prevc from Slovenia once again took the victory.
Women's biathlon relay team fourth
Biathlon. - The Swiss women's relay team took a solid 4th place at the Biathlon World Cup in Antholz. The podium was out of reach for the biathlon quartet of Elisa Gasparin, Lena Häcki-Gross, Aita Gasparin and Amy Baserga. The gap to the third-placed French women - behind Sweden and Norway - was 1:50 minutes. Aita Gasparin, who is usually so accurate and on form, had to go into the penalty loop despite three reloads. Baserga then secured the Swiss' second 4th place in a row with a formidable final lap. Perhaps they have saved the podium for their home World Championships in Lenzerheide.
Hartweg in the top ten
Biathlon. - In the men's pursuit, Niklas Hartweg once again finished in the top ten in tenth place. Starting in seventeenth place, he made up seven places despite two misses thanks to a good run. This is the 24-year-old from Schwyz's sixth top ten finish in his last eight individual races. He is only missing a podium finish this season. Joscha Burkhalter, on the other hand, was unable to take advantage of his good starting position after the sprint. Five penalties saw the man from the Bernese Oberland drop from 14th to 38th place.
