  • Alexei Popyrin wins the ATP 1000 tournament in Montreal. He defeated five top 15 athletes at the tournament.
  • Around two weeks earlier, he beat Stan Wawrinka in two sets at the Olympic Games.
  • Popyrin defeated Andrei Rublev 6:2, 6:4 - his biggest triumph in his tennis career to date.

Popyrin (ATP 30) impressed in the first set above all with his consistency in serving (72 percent first serves) and his attacking power (18 winners). In the second round, Rublev (ATP 6) braced himself against the threat of defeat and equalized a break deficit. However, the 25-year-old Australian took the lead again in the following game with a service break and converted his third match point after a good hour and a half.

For Popyrin, it was the biggest success of his career. He had previously only celebrated two victories at ATP 250 tournaments: 2021 in Singapore and 2023 in Umag, where he defeated Wawrinka in three sets in the final. He had never reached the semi-finals at an ATP 1000 tournament, let alone the final.

Popyrin, who had lost to Alexander Zverev in the round of 16 in Paris after his second-round victory over Wawrinka, put in a consistently strong performance in Montreal. After his opening success, he defeated five top 15 players in a row: Ben Shelton (ATP 14), Grigor Dimitrov (ATP 9), Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 7), Sebastian Korda (ATP 15) and most recently Rublev.
