The Swiss women's handball team also lose their second game of the main round at the European Handball Championship in Vienna. After losing 27:36 to Germany, they were defeated 25:34 by Slovenia.
Coach Knut Ove Joa's team thought they had the best chance against the Slovenians in the main round. Things looked good after the first half. Despite making unnecessary mistakes, the Swiss were only 16:17 behind at the break.
However, the start to the second half was a complete failure. The deficit grew to six goals (17:23) by the 36th minute. Joa called a timeout, which initially had an effect. The Swiss reduced the deficit to 21:23 (42'). After 24:26 (47.), however, nothing came together and the Swiss only scored shortly before the end to make it 25:34. This meant another defeat in the 15th duel against the Slovenians. The top scorers for the Swiss were Tabea Schmid and Mia Emmenegger with five goals each.
After this defeat, it is as good as clear that the Swiss will finish their second European Championship in 11th or 12th place. Their last two opponents will be the Netherlands on Monday and Olympic champions Norway on Wednesday. The young team's main aim there will be to gain further important experience. Points would be tantamount to a sensation.
