Two days after beating the Faroe Islands 28:25, the Swiss women's national team suffered the expected defeat in their second game at the European Handball Championship. They lost 30:35 against Denmark in Basel.
Even though coach Knut Ove Joa's team lost to the Olympic bronze medallists, they can be satisfied with their performance. What the Swiss women showed after the 11:17 (25th) deserves great recognition and underlines the great potential in the very young team. As against the Faroe Islands, Tabea Schmid was named the best player of the game. The 21-year-old pivot scored eight goals from eleven shots.
To conclude the preliminary round, the Swiss will face Croatia, who had to settle for a 17:17 draw against the Faroe Islands, on Tuesday at 20:30. A draw will be enough for them to reach the main round. It would be the next step after just one point, a 26:26 draw against Croatia, at their European Championship debut two years ago.
