Corinne Suter continues her uphill run in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In the last downhill before the World Championships, the racer from Schwyz is two places ahead of Lara Gut-Behrami in 3rd place after 30 racers.
Only the Italians Federica Brignone (1st) and Sofia Goggia (2nd) mastered the Kandahar piste better than Suter. Brignone, who extends her record as the oldest female World Cup winner with her second downhill victory and extends her lead in the overall World Cup, relegates her compatriot Goggia to 2nd place by one hundredth of a second, the difference to Suter is 19 hundredths.
Brignone wins her fifth race of the season; the 34-year-old from Milan was only more successful in the previous season (6 wins). After finishing 21st, 19th, 10th, 15th, 8th and 5th, this is Suter's second podium finish in a row since her comeback in December following a serious crash in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the previous season. She had already finished third in the super-G in Cortina.
Suter: "I'm happy with where I am now"
"I'm not entirely satisfied with the run, I got a bit of a 'mess' with my skis when I entered the steep slope. But compared to Friday's training, I made a big improvement," said Suter in the SRF interview.
In the final training session the day before, Suter had lost almost two seconds to Goggia. The fact that she is back on the podium a year after the crash in Cortina is pleasing: "Sometimes I'm still not clear in my head. But I'm happy with where I am now."
Lara Gut-Behrami finished 18 hundredths behind Suter in 5th place at the World Championship dress rehearsal.
Ortlieb transported away by helicopter after crash - Vonn eliminated
Due to a fall by Nina Ortlieb - the team-mate of Rädler and Hütter, who had just fought her way back from a fractured tibia and fibula, landed in the safety nets and had to be transported away by helicopter - the race was interrupted for longer after 20 racers. Friday's training was already marked by a serious crash. Czech skier Tereza Nova suffered a serious head injury and is currently receiving intensive medical care in hospital.
Two Americans in particular proved that good times are still possible after the interruption. Breezy Johnson comes within six hundredths of Suter in fourth place, while Lauren Macuga is just behind Gut-Behrami in sixth place. Lindsey Vonn, meanwhile, misses out on a gate after a mediocre intermediate time.
Michelle Gisin, Joana Hählen, Delia Durrer and Priska Ming-Nufer also miss the Swiss-Ski selection requirements for the World Championship downhill in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in February at the last attempt. Only Suter, Gut-Behrami and Malorie Blanc, who is taking a break in Garmisch, have therefore met the requirements.
A super-G will follow in Garmisch on Sunday. The start is at 11.00 am.
