Lara Gut-Behrami climbs onto the World Cup podium for the 95th time in the giant slalom at Kronplatz. The Ticino native is only beaten by Alice Robinson from New Zealand.
It is the first podium finish in the basic discipline this season for the skier from Ticino. Her best classification this winter was a 6th place in Kranjska Gora. The best giant slalom racer of last winter proved her improving form, especially in the first run. It was only because of the less than ideal final section that she did not go into the decision as the half-time leader. In the second run, she was not quite able to match her performance from the morning with the seventh-best time.
Unlike Federica Brignone and Sara Hector, however, Gut-Behrami made it to the finish. The Italian, who had skied impressively in the first run, was eliminated, as was the discipline leader from Sweden, who had been classified in 3rd place after half the stint.
Alice Robinson jumped from 5th place to the top thanks to the best run time. She took 56 hundredths off Lara Gut-Behrami, who had won last year at the same venue, in the final standings. It was the fourth World Cup victory for the New Zealander.
The podium was completed by Paula Moltzan, who made up seven places with the second-best time and finished on the giant slalom podium for the first time in her career.
Rast in the top 10 - World Cup points for Kasper
Camille Rast was the second-best Swiss racer in 9th place. At the halfway point, the skier from Valais was still in 7th place and just three tenths off the podium and within touching distance of the top. Wendy Holdener finished in the points for the fifth time in the fifth giant slalom of the season. However, she missed out on her first top 10 result with 15th place.
Vanessa Kasper scored points for the fourth time in the World Cup. The leader of the European Cup giant slalom rankings, who is no longer part of the Swiss-Ski squad, finished in 27th place. The 28-year-old from Graubünden dropped four places in the final decision. The last time she scored World Cup points was three years ago - also at Kronplatz.
