Olympic slalom champion and former giant slalom world champion Petra Vlhova has been forced to withdraw from the World Championships in Saalbach in February. She will not be fit in time after tearing her cruciate ligament.

Vlhova has lost the battle against time, as her coach Mauro Pini explained in a statement from the Slovakian's management. "The rehabilitation of her knee is finally going in the right direction," said the Ticino native. "However, the setbacks in December and January are preventing her from taking part in the World Championships." Unfortunately, participation is therefore not possible.

Vlhova now already has her sights set on the Olympic Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo in a year's time. The 2021 overall World Cup winner suffered a torn cruciate ligament and torn medial collateral ligament at her home race in Jasna exactly one year ago.

It is still unclear whether Vlhova's long-time rival and seven-time world champion Mikaela Shiffrin will be fit in time after the injury she sustained in December in the giant slalom in Killington.
