Marco Odermatt will have to wait at least another year for his first victory in the Hahnenkamm downhill. Canadian James Crawford outdoes the competition with bib number 20 and deprives Alexis Monney of victory.
Alexis Monney was allowed to flirt with victory for 16 runs. The man from Fribourg, who triumphed for the first time in the World Cup in Bormio at the end of December, initially saw most of the favorites bite their teeth out over his time. Then came the Canadian super-G world champion Crawford and took the lead in the crazy race by eight hundredths ahead of Monney.
The 27-year-old, who had never triumphed in the World Cup before, pulled off the coup. And even better from a Canadian perspective: a second Canadian, Cameron Alexander, climbed onto the podium in third place. "That was definitely one of my best runs, everything was just right from top to bottom. That's exactly how you imagine it. This is a big milestone for me, a wonderful day," said Crawford in the SRF interview.
Swiss winning streak snapped
Marco Odermatt had to settle for 6th place. The season dominator, who wanted to close the last significant gap in his palmarès in the downhill the day after winning the super-G, lost 55 hundredths to Crawford. He was 33 hundredths away from a tenth podium place in the last 13 downhill races.
Because Franjo von Allmen (9th), who had finished second three times in the previous downhill races, and Beaver Creek winner Justin Murisier (11th) were also not quite up there with the front runners and Stefan Rogentin (39th) with bib number 1 lost a lot of time, the Swiss winning streak in the fastest discipline was snapped in the fifth downhill race of the winter. The Swiss-Ski athletes had celebrated double victories in Beaver Creek, Val Gardena/Gröden, Bormio and Wengen.
