The Swiss slalom racers achieve their second double victory this winter. Camille Rast wins again in Flachau in Salzburgerland ahead of Wendy Holdener. Mélanie Meillard rounds off the outstanding performance with 5th place.
Due to the absence of Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova, the circle of contenders for victory was larger than usual anyway. And after the first run, Zrinka Ljutic was no longer a factor either. The winner of the previous two slaloms missed out on qualifying for the final after a time-consuming mistake.
Hopes of a leading role in the sixth slalom of the World Cup winter continued to grow in the "field of the remaining". Camille Rast, in the form of her life, was one of the candidates, as was Wendy Holdener, who delivered like in her best days - as if the long forced break had never happened.
Holdener: "It does annoy me a little"
After the premature end of last season due to the fracture in her left ankle, the skier from Schwyz is back at her usual high level. Second place in the slaloms in Killington, Vermont, at the beginning of December and most recently in Kranjska Gora in Slovenia confirmed this.
However, Holdener is not entirely unaffected by the fact that she once again fell just short of victory. "It does annoy me a little," she admits to SRF after missing out on victory. But she can't blame herself much and is satisfied with her performance. "Another Swiss double victory, I'm happy with that."
Camille Rast and Wendy Holdener achieved their first double victory at the beginning of December in Killington, Vermont. Back then, Sweden's Anna Swenn Larsson finished in second place at the same time as the Swabian. This time, her compatriot Sara Hector joined the Swiss duo on the podium. Austria's Katharina Liensberger, who was the clear leader after the first run, slipped to 4th place in the final classification.
Meillard gets closer and closer to the podium
Camille Rast is overjoyed after her victory: "It's incredible. My family is here, I just wanted to give it my all and it worked." Mélanie Meillard also continued her consistently good performances this winter. The Neuchâtel native, who lives in Valais, finished in fifth place for the third time this season and has always been in the top ten in the rankings of the six slaloms. The first podium place in the pole forest seems only a matter of time for her too.
Michelle Gisin, who announced before the race that she would be competing in the slalom for the last time, finished the race in 23rd place.
