Federica Brignone celebrates a superior victory in the World Cup giant slalom in Semmering. The Italian outdistanced the competition by almost six tenths and more. The Swiss women fall short of expectations.

Brignone brought her half-time lead to the finish in impressive style. With the second-fastest time, the Italian even extended her lead and celebrated her second victory of the season. The 34-year-old thus took the lead in the discipline classification from Sara Hector.

The Swede finished in 2nd place behind Brignone on the "panorama slope" and secured her country its first podium finish in Semmering. Alice Robinson completed the podium. The New Zealander improved by three places in the decision and kept the Canadian Valérie Grenier at bay by four hundredths.

The Swiss women were unable to succeed. Lara Gut-Behrami, who was still in second place at the halfway point, had to settle for 9th place after a mishap. The skier from Ticino got her arm caught in a gate in the middle section and was leveraged out. A podium finish - 94th in the World Cup - would have been entirely possible. After the first run, the first three racers had distanced themselves slightly from the rest.

Rast loses the lead in the overall standings

There was also a slight disappointment for Camille Rast. The third-placed racer from Killington didn't really get going in either the first or second run and only finished in 17th place, losing the lead in the overall standings to Brignone. Wendy Holdener finished in 21st place, Simone Wild in 24th.

Vanessa Kaspar (37th), Stefanie Grob (41st) and Janine Schmitt (54th) missed out on the final of the best 30 racers. Delphine Darbellay was also eliminated, as was Mélanie Meillard. Michelle Gisin will miss the races in Semmering, Andrea Ellenberger was absent after suffering an injury in training. She is out for the rest of the season with a lower leg fracture.
