Fredrik Möller takes his first World Cup victory in the super-G in Bormio. The 24-year-old Norwegian wins ahead of the Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr and the once again surprising Swiss Alexis Monney.
Möller has already shown his potential in the super-G this season. In Beaver Creek and Val Gardena, he finished 4th twice, and now he has pulled off a major coup in his eighth super-G at the highest level. With bib number 4, he set a time that none of his competitors could match. Möller provided the difference at the top and bottom with the best section times. Vincent Kriechmayr came closest to the surprising Norwegian. The 2021 World Champion lost two tenths.
The second World Cup podium place went to Alexis Monney. 24 hours after his sensational victory in the downhill, the man from Fribourg delivered another strong performance on the "Stelvio" piste. As with his triumph on Saturday, he was not among the fastest at the top on Sunday either, but turned on the heat at the bottom and lost just 24 hundredths to the leader. He has never been better placed in the super-G than 17th.
In an interview with SRF, the 24-year-old is somewhat lost for words: "I still haven't realized what happened yesterday. And today ... I don't even know what to say. It's really cool!"
Monney snatched the third podium place of his career from Stefan Rogentin with start number 27. Like his team-mate at the top, the man from Graubünden lost a lot of time and finished fourth, 42 hundredths behind.
Four Swiss in the top 6
Marco Odermatt surprisingly missed out on a place on the podium. A superior winner in Bormio in the two previous years, not everything fell into place this time. Before the "Carcentina" traverse - one of the key sections - the leader in the discipline ranking had to take a long route and lost a lot of time, which he was unable to make up at the bottom.
Odermatt finished in 5th place. This is only the fourth time in the last 20 super-G races that the man from Nidwalden has failed to make it into the top 3. Franjo von Allmen once again proved his good form and finished in 6th place behind Odermatt.
Odermatt: "Too much has definitely happened this week"
The year came to an unpleasant end for Gino Caviezel. The man from Graubünden, who opened the race, got his left ski stuck on a gate before the San Pietro jump and crashed. He came to a standstill after a long sliding phase in the flat section and immediately signaled that he had hurt his right leg. After lengthy treatment, Caviezel was transported away by helicopter.
This was another reason why Odermatt did not take the full risk today, as he said in an interview with SRF: "Too much has definitely happened this week to ski down at full risk." Loïc Meillard was not at the start. The man from Neuchâtel, who lives in Valais, decided not to start due to persistent back problems.
