Federica Brignone is the measure of all things in the giant slalom. The Italian wins her third World Cup race in a row in Are and outclasses the competition by 1.36 seconds or more. The Swiss women are far behind.

Brignone is currently unstoppable in the basic discipline. It was the 34-year-old's fifth triumph in eight races. Added to this is the World Championship title in Saalbach. In Are, she set the best time in both runs. In difficult conditions with salty snow - which the Italian loves - the competition raced into the ground.

As so often this season, Alice Robinson made it onto the podium in second place. The New Zealander has now finished in the top 3 in seven out of eight races and, thanks to her consistency, continues to lead the giant slalom rankings. Brignone, who in addition to her five triumphs has also been eliminated three times, still has a 20-point lead ahead of the final race.

Italy's Lara Colturi, competing for Albania, completed the podium. She benefited from Sofia Goggia's retirement. The Italian retired on her way to her first podium finish in the giant slalom for more than seven years. Still in second place at the halfway point, a transition proved to be her undoing while she was in the lead.

Gut-Behrami loses pole

The Swiss women were among the defeated. Somewhat surprisingly, the best athlete in the Swiss-Ski team was Camille Rast. The Valais native, who had an unfortunate fall in the slalom in Sestriere just two weeks ago and subsequently complained of hip problems, finished in 8th place.

Lara Gut-Behrami was the second Swiss woman to make it into the top ten. The two-time podium racer in this giant slalom season did not get up to speed as desired. She struggled with the warm conditions and, to make matters worse, lost a pole on her second run. In the end, she finished ninth, 2.52 seconds behind. Wendy Holdener lost another place in the second run and finished 16th.
