Austria's ski racers are facing a historic dry spell. The Austria men are still without a World Cup win this season ahead of the final in Sun Valley.

If the Austrians cannot avert the looming "waddle" in the four remaining races, what last happened to them 38 years ago, in the winter of 1986/87, will occur.

After 34 of the season's 38 World Cup races, they have five 2nd and four 3rd places to their name. The only Austrian men's victory came at the home World Championships in Schladming thanks to Raphael Haaser's coup in the giant slalom.

On Sunday, Fabio Gstrein was in 3rd place after the first run when Loïc Meillard won the slalom in Hafjell. However, the new internal number 1 of the Austria team then lost three positions instead of making up two. Manuel Feller, who won the small crystal globe in the slalom World Cup in the previous season, only made it onto the podium twice after a mixed start to the season.
