Noè Ponti makes a successful start to the Short Course World Championships in Budapest. He swims a world championship record in the 50 m dolphin preliminaries.

Ponti clocked a time of 21.53 seconds in his showpiece discipline, just three hundredths above his own world record, which he set in Singapore at the beginning of November. Dutchman Nyls Korstanje came closest to the 23-year-old from Ticino. He swam the 50 m in 21.62 in his preliminary heat. Ponti, who subsequently decided not to start in the 200 m medley, will compete in the semi-final of the 50 m dolphin on Tuesday evening.

Things went less well for Roman Mityukov, who clearly missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the 100 m backstroke. The 24-year-old from Geneva, who won Olympic bronze over the double distance in Paris in the summer, finished ninth in his preliminary heat in 51.74 seconds.
