Vélo d'Or creates new Gino Mäder Award for social commitment among professional cyclists.
As every year, the "Vélo d'Or" is awarded at the beginning of December. In addition to the best female and male cyclist of the year, the best classic cyclists of both genders have also been honored since 2023. This year, another award has been added: the Gino Mäder Award.
With this award, the organizers of the event - the French sports newspaper l'Equipe and Vélo Magazine - honor the cyclist who has stood out throughout the year for their social commitment. There is a specific reason why the prize bears Mäder's name. The Swiss professional, who was killed in an accident at the Tour de Suisse in 2023, was known for his commitment to a better world. During his career, he raised money to donate to climate protection organizations.
This year, the organizers of the Tour de Suisse have also introduced an award in Mäder's name, the #RideForGino mountain prize, which will be awarded to the rider who crosses the highest point of the tour first.
