In future, Swiss national teams should be allowed to legally wear the Swiss coat of arms on their jerseys. The National Council has adopted a motion to amend the Coat of Arms Protection Act accordingly.
The motion by Lucerne FDP Councillor of States Damian Müller called for the lawful use of the coat of arms by Swiss national teams. The motion was already adopted by the Council of States in the summer session. The Federal Council will now have to submit an amendment to the law to Parliament.
The debate was prompted by the occasional unlawful use of the coat of arms on the ice hockey team's jersey. In the meantime, the field hockey association has reached a temporary agreement with the responsible federal agency regarding the use of the coat of arms. Since the revised Coat of Arms Protection Act came into force in 2017, only the Confederation is permitted to use the coat of arms.
