Michael Schär will take over the role of Swiss national road cycling coach at the beginning of January. The Lucerne native will succeed Michael Albasini, who after four years with Swiss Cycling will take up a new position as sporting director of the Swiss team Q36.5.
Schär will be responsible for both the elite and U23 national squads while retaining his role as sporting director of the Lidl-Trek professional team. In a communiqué from Swiss Cycling, Schär expressed his enthusiasm for the new role: "I am very much looking forward to the new challenge and am full of passion to pass on some of my experience to the young racers."
Patrick Müller, who is quoted in the press release, is delighted with the quick succession plan: "I am happy that we were able to arrange Michael Albasini's successor so quickly. Michael Schär was our preferred candidate. He knows our system and the athletes and brings a wealth of know-how from the professional camp."
Schär is already familiar with the Swiss federation, having worked as an assistant to his predecessor at the World Championships in Zurich at the end of September. The 38-year-old ended his active career a year ago.
